20) USNS Kane
The USNS Kane,
an oceanographic research ship I commanded on two occasions. Similar to
the Wyman, and Wilkes in length, and beam, but different slightly in interior
makeup, and having Allis-Chalmers instead of General Electric electrical
components. Her diesels were ALCO like the other two. The USNS Bent was
identical to the Kane. More on this ship later.
21) USNS Wilkes
The USNS Wilkes,
an oceanographic research ship I commanded on two occasions. Similar to
the Kane in length, and beam, but different slightly in interior
makeup, and having General Electric instead of Allis-Chalmers electrical
components. Her diesels were ALCO like the other. The USNS Wyman was
identical. More on this ship later.
23) USNS Hess
The USNS Hess,
a "Mariner" class freighter converted for oceanograhpy to replace Dutton,
Bowditch, and Michelson. Nice size - 500+ feet, fast - 25 knots...loved
this ship. More later.
24) School Ship John W. Brown
The SS John
W. Brown a
"Liberty" class freighter converted for troop carrying during
WW 2, and later acguired by the Board of Education of New York City, N.Y.
for Metropolitan Vocational High School as a school ship. I graduated from
Metropolitan in 1951, shipping out with Mobil Oil. I never thought in those
days, that if sailing was so great, what were my instructors, who all held
Master's Licenses, working as teachers for the Department of Education for?
