Passports to Mississippi Territory

From South Carolina .....

Around 1805, Paul Collins Abney, who was married in Spartanburg, moved his family West, out of the Piedmont area of South Carolina. Pioneers to the Mississippi Territory would leave this upstate area of South Carolina and, using pack horses, travel about 200 miles to the Holston River in Northeast Tennessee (Knoxville). They probably traveled via the South Carolina State Road west on Warriors Path, then continued on the Catawba Trail to the Wilderness Road Fort near Kingsport, Tennessee. From there they moved down the western slopes of the Appalachian Mountains and probably, via the Tennessee River, on to Chattanooga and across the state to Maury County.

From Tennessee ....

Our Robert Releford, born in Maury County, Tennessee in 1810, and his family moved on to the new state of Mississippi just prior to 1820. They traveled down the Natchez Trace to a jumping off point in Hinds County. The Trace was one of the trails which the Indians allowed the settlers to use in accordance with a treaty with the U.S. Government. It was the most traveled of the land routes into the new Mississippi Territory and the new State. The 1820 Census has the Paul Collins Abney family in the Big Black River area of Warren County, Mississippi. After a few years, they moved across the river into Hinds County.
