Francis Brokaw, born in Jefferson County was reared mostly in Harrison and Morgan Counties, Ohio. His first wife Sarah Blazer, born 31-August-1804 was a daughter of William Blazer and Catherine Hayden from New Jersey. They married on 26-June-1833 and lived for a while in Belmont County, Ohio where their four children were born: William, twins Benjamin & Catherine Amelia, and Sylvester. Sarah died of premature childbirth with Slyvester who was stillborn. Both she and Slyvester are buried in Belmont Ridge Cemetery. Belmont County, Ohio.
Francis then married Mrs. Elizabeth Sears-Pennington, a widow with children, and they had an additional three children two of which, George (my great great grandfather) and Nancy, were born there in Belmont County. In the spring of 1844 Francis and Elizabeth set out with their three sets of children (his, hers & theirs) from Eastern Ohio and traveled in a covered wagon to Marion County, Illinois.
Before their last child was born, Francis who was ill died from the rigors of the trip (fall of 1844) and was buried in a cemetery about ten miles west of Salem, Marion County, Illinois. After burying her husband Elizabeth started back to Ohio with all the children, in her late pregnancy driving the covered wagon, and had their last child John Francis in Adams County, Indiana.
