Their story

History of the name Brokaw

George Brokaw was born in Somerset County, New Jersey, and was living in Sussex County in 1776 when he joined the Revolutionary Army and served under General George Washington during the Battle of Long Island. He was discharged in 1777 and returned to Sussex County where he married Jane Custard . Jane was the daughter of William Custard and Sarah Swartwout .

The first of their twelve children was Abraham, followed by Benjamin; Sarah; George Jr.; William; Judith; Jane; John P.; Mary; Isaac; Jacob, and Peter. After the marriage Jane must have gone back to Somerset County, NJ as the first two children were born there. The next two probably were born in Sussex County, NJ, after the Revolutionary War was over. Numbers five and six were born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania and seven through twelve in Washington County, Pennsylvania.

The family eventually settled on a tract of land that George patented in Harrison and Jefferson Counties, Ohio, near the township of Cadiz, where both George and Jane are buried in the Old Crabapple Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
