freezeout 2003

Freezeout, 2003 - "The Beat Goes On"

This April the 17th, 2003, three hardy souls met at Freezeout to continue the cleanup process started last year. This is the report from one of them, about all of them. Cousin Nancy Crone tell us how it was. (sic)

"Well Asa and everyone, it was only SC (Bland), Richard (Crone) and me (Nancy Bland-Crone) there. SC got there a little before us, had the access area already mowed and was making his third or fourth swipe at the center of the cemetery when we got there.

It was amazing how much that place had grown up in less than a month. A month ago there were no leaves on the thousands of baby oaks that had sprung up from all the trunks of those trees we cut down last year. The really brushy picture (a) is to the left as you enter the gate, towards where that little fenced grave is. You can't even see it.

Richard grabbed the grubbing hoe and started in on the mesquites so that SC wouldn't get a flat tire on "Old Blue", and he worked for several hours just grubbing them out. My job was to go around with the loppers and clear the brush around the base of the trees and headstones, where the lawn mower couldn't get. There ain't a baby tree on that place anymore, but as Schwartzenegger would say, they'll be baaaackkk.

Sam (SC) won the war of the Irises that I had hoped to save. Actually, I didn't even squabble about them, they'll be back too. We finished at 2:15 in the afternoon.

The angel I sent the picture of was for three small children of my great grandmother who all died December1899. You might remember Gail talking about them - there were only three iron ore rocks for the heads and three smaller ones at the feet. Like a dog with a bone, I couldn't let go of that until I did something to recognize those little kids; so I did. Wish you coulda been there." Nancy.

Nancy, I also wish I could have been there with you, I really tried, to no avail. However, as we all can see from the photos the job was "In good hands", and your efforts are really appreciated.
