George Baxter Butler (Sr.) was born 23 Jan 1874 in Durham, Hancock, Illinois. He is the son of Harriet Cassingham and Samuel Baxter Butler. He died 8 Aug 1940 at the age of 66 in LaHarpe, Hancock, Illinois. He is buried at LaHarpe Cemetery, LaHarpe, Hancock, Illinois.

On 11 Sep 1900, he married Clara Estelle Rich in La Crosse, Hancock, Illinois. She is the daughter of James Calvin Rich and Mary Charlotte Hamilton. Her sister, Bertha, married George's brother, Milton. Clara was born 10 Aug 1881 in Casey, Guthrie, Iowa and died 3 Dec 1957 at the age of 76. She is buried at LaHarpe Cemetery, LaHarpe, Hancock, Illinois.
