Robert Jack Cassingham

Robert Jack Cassingham, 75, of Fort Smith died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, in a local hospital. He was born Nov. 6, 1931, in Kokomo, Ind., to Harry and Rhoda Cassingham. In 1953, he married Mary Louise Holt.

Jack graduated from Kokomo High School in 1950. He received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1954, a DDS degree from Indiana University Dental School in 1958 and a master of science in 1970. Jack had a dental practice in Hillsboro, Ind., and then in Kokomo from 1960 to 1968. He was a professor of periodontology at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., from 1970 to 1974. He was a professor of periodontology at Louisiana University School of Dentistry in New Orleans from 1974 to 1994, from which he retired in 1994. At that time, he was granted the title professor emeritus. A chair at Louisiana State University was named for Jack and his wife, Mary Lou, in 2005.

He was a member of Scottish Rite, an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Kokomo, the Aurora United Methodist Church in New Orleans and the Faith United Methodist Church in Fort Smith. He was very active in the dental profession, having served as president of the New Orleans Dental Association, the Louisiana Dental Association and on various committees of the American Dental Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Catherine, and a brother, James.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; and his sons, Dr. Scott Franklin Cassingham and wife Pamela of Shreveport, La., Lt. Col. (Retired) Jack Holt Cassingham and wife Catherine of Fort Smith; Guy Henry Cassingham and wife Tanya of Atlanta, Ga., and Lee Jay Cassingham of Colorado Springs, Colo. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Amanda, Lydia, Hannah, Camille, Megan and Sean.

Dr. Jack Cassingham’s remains were cremated. A memorial service will be held at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, dedicated for New Orleans reconstruction, or the charity of your choice.
