Mrs. Sophia Tarman, who has been cared for by her nieces, Misses Ollie and Martha Tarman, the past winter, died at their home in this city, Friday, March 16, 1923, aged 81 years, 9 months and 22 days. Mrs. Tarman was a daughter of Richard and Margaret Cassingham and was born May 24, 1841, at Frazeysburg, Ohio. She came to this vicinity with her parents when about 13 years old and the remainder of her life was spent here. She was married to Archibald Tarman, November 11, 1860, and to them three daughters were born. Blanch died in 1880, Alice in 1897 and Oletha in 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Tarman lived on their farm just south of town until about 1897 when they purchased property and moved to town. Their life was a busy, happy one, as they were always doing kindly deeds for others. The husband died July 23, 1919, leaving the aged wife. She lived alone in the home during the summer but on account of feebleness was persuaded to go to her nieces' for the winters and there she was tenderly and lovingly cared for. Mr. and Mrs. Tarman joined church in an early day, attending services which were held in a school house near LaCrosse, but when they moved to LaHarpe they joined the church here and later transferred to the Union church. Two brothers, George B. Cassingham of Lyons Kansas, and William of this city survive her. Funeral services were held at the Union church, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. M.F. Miller officiating. Mrs. Peter Peck of Shenandoah, Iowa, and Mrs. Laura Tarman, of Nevada, Iowa, were here to attend the funeral. |
