Gilbert H. Cummings is the son of Ebenezer Cummings and Jane Harris. He was born 12 Jul 1827 in Galena, Jo Daviess, Illinois. He died in May 1867 at age 39 in Stockton, San Joaquin, California. He is buried at Liberty Cemetery, San Joaquin County, California.
On 30 Jun 1850/1852, he married Charity Jane Barzee in Galena, Jo Daviess, Illinois. She is the daughter of James Woodard Barzee and Elizabeth Whiteham. She was born 6 Sep 1830 in Halderman, Ontario, Canada and died 19 Oct 1901 at age 71 in Heppner, Morrow, Oregon.

- George Harvey Cummings was born in 1854 in Galena, Jo Daviess, Illinois.
- Viola May Cummings was born 3 Jan 1859 in Breckenridge County, Kansas. She is a twin to Volney.
- Volney Jay Cummings was born 3 Jan 1859 in Breckenridge County, Kansas. He is a twin to Viola. He died about 1868 at age 9 in California.
- Harrietta Idaho Cummings was born 3 Oct 1862 in Dallas, Polk, Oregon. She is a twin to Harrison.
- Harrison Columbia Cummings was born 3 Oct 1862 in Dallas, Polk, Oregon. He is a twin to Harrietta.

There seems to be a great deal of uncertainty regarding nearly all the facts associated with this family. I have not been able to corroborate any significant fact.
Charity's birthplace is given as Halderman, Ontario. We know of no such place. There is, however, a Haldimand, Northumberland, Ontario as well as a Haldimand County, Ontario. Her aunt Betsy was known to be living in Northumberland County, Ontario in the 1851 census. I suspect that Charity's birthplace is, in fact, Haldimand, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada.
