Mildred J. Smith

Mildred J. Smith, 82, of La Crosse died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center in La Crosse. She was born Jan. 12, 1920, in La Crosse to Wilfred and Gertrude (Hulberg) Smale and graduated from La Crosse Central High School. Mildred also graduated from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with a degree in education.

She taught elementary school in Savanna, Ill., where she met her future husband, Donald A. Smith. They were married Aug. 14, 1942, in La Crosse, and he preceded her in death Jan. 13, 1988.

Mildred is survived by two daughters, Nancy Brown of La Crosse and Barbara (Eric) Johnston of Manchester, N.H.; one son, Scott (Linda) Smith of Onalaska, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Jason (Tammy) Brown, Nathan Brown, Lucas Smith, Tiffany (Corey) Landsom, Jerico Johnston, Dayne Johnston and Shea Johnston; five great-grandchildren, Austin and Andrew Brown, Damien, Caleb and Olivia Landsom; and one brother, John Smale of La Crosse. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Chad Johnston.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, with Deacon Frank Abnet of St. Patrick's Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services.
