Notes

A review of the 1840 census only shows one Hastings family in Hancock county, Ohio -- namely, Seymour. He does not appear in 1850, but various "stray" Hastings do appear. I think there is a good likelihood that Seymour died before 1850 and some, if not all, of these are his orphaned children. They are as follows:

  • Melissa Hastings (age 12) is living in the home of Anthony and Fanny Clabaugh. This is Elizabeth Mellissa Hastings (child number 11). Fanny Clabaugh is her older sister, Elizabeth Fanny (Hastings) Clabaugh.
  • Mary Ann Hastings (age 14) is living in the home of Noah McClish. There is no known relationship between the Hastings and the McClishes. According to the Ohio Marriage index, Mary Ann married Henry Climer in 1851. I believe this may be child number 10 above, but have not been able to prove it.
  • Eliza Hastings (age 44), Nancy Hastings (age 18) and Martha Jane Hastings (age 5) are all living in the home of Philip Street. The Ohio Marriage index tells us that Mrs. Street's maiden name is Clabaugh. Perhaps these three were sheltered at the request of Fanny (Hastings) Clabaugh. Nancy later married Henry Rice and Eliza and Martha relocated with the Rices to Illinois, then Beatrice, NE. The 1860 and 1870 censuses indicate that both Eliza and Nancy were born in Maryland which would seem to argue against their being related to Seymour.

If anyone has definitive information about any of these people I would love to hear from you.

Lorenzo: I am guessing Lorenzo is a son of Seymour. He enlisted in the army just one week after William, at the same location as William and showing the same place of birth as William.
