Walter Homer Riley is the son of Ann Eliza Pumphrey and Samuel Smith Riley. Homer, as he is known, was born 29 October 1880 in Whitley county, Indiana. He died in December 1962 at age 81 in Whitley county, Indiana. He is buried at Eel River Cemetery, Allen, Indiana.

• On 6 May 1915, he married Beulah Vesta Tulley in Hillsdale, Hillsdale, Michigan. She is the daughter of Wesley C. Tulley and Elmira E. Gnagy. She was born in January 1879 in Smith, Whitley, Indiana. She died in January 1968 at age 89 in Whitley county, Indiana. She is buried at Eel River Cemetery, Allen, Indiana.

In 1910, Walter broke his leg when he fell from a buggy as reported in the Fort Wayne Weekly Sentinel, Fort Wayne, IN, 31 Aug 1910.
