Lucy Jane Burdette is the daughter of Susannah Scott and Lewis Jackson Burdette. She was born 20 March 1856 in Monroe county, West Virginia (though then it was Virginia). She died 25 March 1883 at age 27 in Wolf Creek, Monroe, West Virginia. She is buried at Swope Cemetery, Monroe, West Virginia.

On 28 May 1873, at age 17, she married Jonathan Joseph Swope, who was age 18, at Lucy's parents' home in Monroe county, West Virginia. He is the son of Jonathan Swope and Susanna Siders. He was born 28 December 1854 in Monroe county, West Virginia (then called Virginia). He died 5 June 1917 at age 62 in West Virginia.
