Mary Elizabeth Swope is the daughter of Lucy Jane Burdette and Jonathan Joseph Swope. She was born 3 August 1875 in Laurel Creek, Monroe, West Virginia. She died 10 August 1967 at age 92 in Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia.

On 9 August 1898, at age 23, she married John W. Cooke, who was age 25, in Hinton, Summers, West Virginia. He is the son of Green M. Cooke and Margaret Cooke. He was born 29 June 1873 in Jesse, Wyoming, West Virginia. He died 5 January 1955 at age 81 in Charleston, Kanawha, West Virginia. He was buried 7 January 1955 at Sunset Memorial Cemetery, Charleston, West Virginia.

1. Paul Haddon Cooke was born 1 July 1899 in Jesse, Wyoming, West Virginia.

4. Joseph Malcolm Cooke was born 14 December 1905 in West Virginia. He died 23 June 1976 at age 70 in Lavalette, Wayne, West Virginia. He is buried at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, Kanawha, West Virginia.
   • About 1928 at age 22 he married Augusta Axelina Mahoney, who was age 20. She is the daughter of Frederic Moore Mahoney and Hilma Axelina Osterman. She was born 14 June 1907 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. She died 20 January 1988 at age 80 in Lavalette, Wayne, West Virginia. She is buried at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston, Kanawha, West Virginia.
5. Johnsie Sue Cooke was born 27 December 1907 in Charleston, Kanawha, West Virginia.
