James Allen Miller (Sr.) is the son of Paulina Scott and William F. Miller. He was born 25 February 1861 in Monroe county, West Virginia (though then it was Virginia). He died 19 May 1914 at age 53. He is buried at Red Sulphur Springs Church Cemetery, Red Sulphur, Monroe, West Virginia.

On 13 November 1901, at age 40, he married Roxie May Campbell, who was age 28, in Monroe county, West Virginia. She is the daughter of Robert Dunbar Campbell and Mary Catherine Johnson. She was born 30 July 1873 in Indian Creek, Monroe, West Virginia. She died 21 January 1967 at age 93 in Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia. She is buried at Red Sulphur Springs Church Cemetery, Red Sulphur, Monroe, West Virginia.
