Mary Virginia Miller is the daughter of James Allen Miller (Sr.) and Roxie May Campbell. Virginia, as she is sometimes known, was born about 1907 in West Virginia.

On 24 June 1930, at about age 23, she married Andrew Emerson Johnson (Jr.), who was age 27, in Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia. Known at times as Emerson, he is the son of Andrew Emerson Johnson (Sr.) and Cora Hunter Alexander. He was born 7 August 1902 in Irish Corner, Greenbrier, West Virginia.
