• On 24 November 1897, at age 21, he married Alice Dearing, who was age 20, at her parents' home in Monroe county, West Virginia. She is the daughter of James Harvey Dearing and Mary Jane Burdette. She was born 10 April 1877 in Greenbrier county, West Virginia. She died 27 December 1955 at age 78 in Sinks Grove, Monroe, West Virginia. She is buried at Scott Family Cemetery, Sinks Grove, Monroe, West Virginia.

1. James Gilmer Scott was born 2 May 1899 in West Virginia. He died 22 August 1969 at age 70 in Ronceverte, Greenbrier, West Virginia. He was buried 24 August 1969 at Green Hill Cemetery, Monroe, West Virginia.
   • On 10 October 1956, at age 57, he married Ruth Brown Humphreys, who was age 44 in Lindside, Monroe, West Virginia. She is the daughter of Henry Ford Humphreys and Nannie Bell Miller. She was born 24 February 1912 in Willow Bend, Monroe, West Virginia. She died 17 March 2000 at age 88 in West Virginia. She was previously married and would marry again after James' death.
2. Orr Scott (Sr.) was born 14 February 1902 in Monroe county, West Virginia.

Notes

In the 1900 census, Alice indicates that she had given birth to two children, only one of whom (James) was still living. That other child is otherwise unknown. [Orr was born later.]
