On 30 Mar 1879, at age 26, he married Hattie Armstrong, who was age 17, in Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan. She is the daughter of Alford Armstrong and Aurelia Whitmore. She was born 18 May 1861 in Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan. She died 30 August 1907 at age 46 in Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan. She was buried on 1 September 1907 at Ashland Center Cemetery, Ashland Center, Newaygo, Michigan.

   • On 28 March 1914, at age 33, he married Mary Hyacinthe Abbott in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan. She is the daughter of Stephen Abbott and Mary Franks. She was born 17 March 1882 in Moorland, Muskegon, Michigan.
3. Nettie Egolf was born 14 September 1883 in Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan.
4. Mary A. Egolf was born 23 May 1885 in Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan. She died 12 October 1950 at age 65 in Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan.
   • On 28 May 1910, at age 25, she married John Harmon, who was age 22, in Muskegon, Muskegon, Michigan. He was born about 1888 in Michigan.
   • She married Mr. Delbridge.
5. Jessie Egolf was born 30 July 1888 in Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan. She died 25 July 1915 at age 26 in Bridgeton, Newaygo, Michigan. She was buried 27 July 1915 at Holton, Muskegon, Michigan.
   • On 25 October 1913, at age 25, she married George A. Marshall, who was age 50, in Bridgeton, Newaygo, Michigan. He is the son of Robinson Marshall and Alice R. Powels. He was born 20 August 1863 in Michigan. He died 1 November 1951 at age 88 in White Cloud, Newaygo, Michigan. He was buried 3 November 1951 at Holton, Muskegon, Michigan.
6. Alice Egolf was born 16 June 1891 in Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan.
7. Sherman Egolf was born 30 March 1894 in Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan.
8. (female) Egolf was born 22 January 1898 in Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan. She died sometime after the 1900 census.
9. Effie B. Egolf was born 22 July 1900 Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan.
10. Gladys L. Egolf was born 27 November 1901 in Ashland, Newaygo, Michigan. She died 17 June 1988 at age 86 in Denver, Denver, Colorado.
    • She married Harry Brown. He died in Denver, Denver, Colorado.

Notes

There is some confusion about the list of children. Sylvester's death certificate says he is the father of 9 children -- all of whom were still living at his death. That would suggest that the unnamed daughter (#8) was still alive as of January 1901. But it also raises questions about Gladys (#10). If she really was born in November 1901, that would be more than 10 months after Sylvester's death -- which seems unlikely. On the other hand, Gladys's Social Security Death Index entry says she was born in November 1900, not 1901. But that would put her birth just 4 months after Effie's birth -- also unlikely. It would also mean that there were 10 children at Sylvester's death, not 9 as stated on the death certificate. Clearly more information is needed before we can solve this mystery.
