Write To Me

Matthew Hale Hively is the son of John Hively and Elizabeth Gradeless. He was born in 1849 in Thorncreek, Whitley, Indiana. He may have died about 1897 at about age 48 or 25 Jun 1932 at age 83 in Ft. Wayne, Allen, Indiana. He may be buried at Blue River Cemetery, Whitley County, Indiana.

On 7 Nov 1878, he married Anne Cordelia Widup in Whitley County, Indiana. Usually known as Cora, she is the daughter of William Henry Widup and Mary Knight. She was born 2 Jun 1856 in Columbia City, Whitley, Indiana. Matthew and Cora divorced in March 1897 in Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana. Cora later married James W. Stewart. She died 10 Jul 1932  at age 76 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. She is buried at Green Hill Cemetery, Columbia City, Whitley, Indiana.

Child of Matthew Hale Hively and Anne Cordelia Widup:

  1. Floyd Alon Hively was born 5 June 1880 in Indiana.

Notes

Facts relating to this family are somewhat uncertain.

Matthew:

  • In all the census records I have located he is listed as Matthew or M. H. But in the 1897 city directory for Fort Wayne, there is a Hale H. Hively and a Floyd A. Hively living together. In 1898, Floyd Hively is living with Anna C. Hively who is listed as the widow of Hale H. Hively. Finally, there is grave marker for a Hale F. Hively who is reported to have died in 1932. One would be inclined to assume that Matthew H., Hale H. and Hale F. are three different people, but I can not find them each listed in the census records -- only Matthew is listed which may mean that they are the same person.
  • A death date for Matthew is difficult. If he is the same as Hale H. Hively, he seems to have died about 1897 since Anna is listed as a widow in the 1898 Fort Wayne city directory. On the other hand, there is a grave marker for Hale F. Hively that gives the death date as 1932.

Anne:

  • The only certain information we have about Anne is the marriage index from Whitley county that refers to the marriage of "Matthew H. Hively" and "Cora Widup". In the 1880 census, she is listed as Cora. But I can not find any references to a Cora Widup prior to their marriage, though there are census entries for an Anna Widup. If Matthew H. Hively and Hale H. Hively are the same person, then Cora must be the person referred to as Anna C. Hively in the Fort Wayne directory.

Floyd:

  • If Matthew H. Hively and Hale H. Hively are the same person, then this seems to be his son. But if Matthew and Hale are not the same person, then Floyd is probably not Matthew's son.
