Joseph A. Hively is the son of Peter Shriner Hively and Elizabeth Huffman Cowan. He was born about May 1843/1844 in Indiana. He died in 1913 at age 68. He is buried at South Park Cemetery, Whitley, Indiana.

  • In 1866, he married Sophia Jane Tannehill. She is the daughter of William Tannehill (VII) and Mary Jane Smalley. She was born in February 1851 in Indiana. She died in 1931 at age 79 in Columbia City, Thorncreek Township, Whitley, Indiana. She is buried at South Park Cemetery, Whitley, Indiana.

Children of Joseph A. Hively and Sophia Jane Tannehill:

  1. Mary Elizabeth Hively was born 3 March 1869 in Whitley county, Indiana.
  2. Anna B. Hively was born in January 1872 in Indiana.
  3. Charles S. Hively was born 15 April 1877 in Indiana.
  4. Sarah Ellen Hively was born 30 July 1882 in Richland, Whitley, Indiana.

Notes

There is considerable confusion about who actually married Sophia Jane Tannehill. Many family trees available on the internet list her husband as Jacob Joseph Hively who was born in Ohio, the son of John Hively and Barbara Burkholder. Those family trees point to an 1870 census listing for him in which he is still single and living with his parents (who are not John and Barbara, by the way) in Green, Mahoning, Ohio. But Sophia and Joseph married in 1866 and already appear as a married couple (with a 1 year old child) in the 1870 census living in Richland, Whitley, Indiana. This would certainly suggest that Sophia's husband is not the Jacob Joseph Hively who in the same census year is listed in Ohio. Additionally, in the 1870 and 1880 censuses, Sophia's husband gives his birthplace as Indiana (not Ohio where the Jacob Hively was born) -- unfortunately, in the 1900 and 1910 censuses it is listed as Ohio, diluting the evidence. Taking all the evidence together, I believe that the Joseph Hively who married Sophia is our Joseph not the Jacob Joseph Hively born in Ohio as listed in those other family trees.
