Clifford Dean Gradeless is the son of Clara Carmen Anspaugh and Cecil Gradeless. Kip, as he is known, was born 3 June 1931 in Columbia City, Whitley, Indiana. He died 13 January 2006 at age 74 in Columbia City, Whitley, Indiana. On 18 January 2006, he was buried at South Whitley Cemetery, South Whitley, Whitley, Indiana.

On 9 May 1954, he married Constance Ann Smith at Oak Grove Methodist Church, Oak Grove, Whitley, Indiana. She is the daughter of Robert Smith and Elouise Smith. She was born in 1931 in Indiana.
