Irvin 'Jim' Hartman

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Sandy for retired U.S. Navy Capt. Irvin "Jim" Hartman, who died Nov. 20 at age 87. A private graveside service and inurnment with full military honors were held Nov. 27 in Willamette National Cemetery, attended by a full contingent of submarine veterans of World War II.

Hartman was born Sept. 14, 1911, near Columbia City, Ind. A 1933 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he served as an officer in the U.S. Navy from 1933 to 1959, when he retired and moved to Oregon. He was awarded the Navy Cross -- the Navy's highest medal for heroism -- the Silver Star and a Gold Star in lieu of a second Silver Star for his actions in combat.

After retiring, he helped develop and promote the concept of Mt. Hood Community College. He also became the school's first salaried employee, as director of plant services. He retired in 1972. In 1935, he married Elizabeth B. Daubin; she died in 1989. In 1991, he married Elaine Dyson.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Patricia H. Spencer of Milwaukie; sons, Michael L. of Gresham, Chris R. of Clackamas and Andrew B. of Eugene; 17 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
