Descendants of Peter Shriner
[Herald-Dispatch, Huntington, WV, Dec 5, 2003] ELLEN E. MILLER, 91, died at Greystone Manor in Lewisburg, W.Va., on Friday, February 28, 2003. Services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Klingel Carpenter Mortuary with the Rev. Grey Hampton officiating. Interment will follow at Woodmere Memorial Park. She was born August 22, 1911, in Hans Creek, W.Va., a daughter of the late James A. and Roxie Campbell Miller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Mason C. and James A. Miller, and a sister, Virginia Johnson. She was a graduate from Huntington High School. She attended and graduated from the College of Nursing and Health, University of Cincinnati, as a registered nurse. She was a resident of Huntington for 76 years. She enlisted in the U. S. Navy Nurse Corps in l941. She served and rose to the rank of Lt. Commander at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, Calif., before being called to serve during World War II on the hospital ship, the USS Solace in the South Pacific. She was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1948 while serving at the U.S. Naval Hospital on Long Island, N.Y. Following her years as a Navy nurse, she worked in private practice for 15 years. She then worked in public health nursing and retired at the age of 72 in 1984. She loved her work caring for people. In retirement, she traveled and was a devoted volunteer at the First Presbyterian Church in Huntington and at Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was a member of the Conference Club of the YWCA. She is survived by three nephews, Emerson Johnson of Montgomery, Ala., James A. Miller Jr. of Redding, Conn., Robert E. Miller of Sinks Grove, W.Va., and three nieces, Isabel Bartholomew of Gaithersburg, Md., Julia Demler of Sparks, Nev., and Sue Ellen Miller of Athens, Ohio.
