Gladys Eleanor Hedrick

RUPERT - Gladys Eleanor Hedrick, 84, of Kessler Road, Rupert, died March 9, 2004, in Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, following a sudden illness.

Born March 27, 1919, at Kieffer, she was the daughter of the late Jennings Ray and Zenna Marshall Walkup Hunter. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Scott Hedrick, Dec. 11, 2003; five sisters, Dorothy Hunter, Gertrude Quick, Margie Walkup, Ruth Lauer and Jackie Eilts; three brothers, Roy, Ray and Marvin Hunter; and two great-grandchildren, Chad Fleeman and Justin Winfrey.

She was a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church, Kieffer, and a homemaker and truly enjoyed raising all her children and spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren have many fond memories of visiting and spending summers with 'Granny,' as they fondly referred to their grandmother. "We remember Granny always had big meals on the table and always cooked our favorite foods. Granny not only raised her children, but most of her grandchildren, too." Even her own children recall as they were growing up that Gladys would take in folks in need of a temporary place to stay. She was indeed loving and hospitable and was much loved by all of her grandchildren.

Survivors include five daughters and their husbands, Geraldine and Jerry Jacobs of Hurricane, Gladys Carroll and Bo Gibson, Sandra Ann Walkup, Ruth Lynn and Dwight Hanson and Debra Gaye and Gary Deitz, all of Rupert; one son and his wife, Marvin Lewis and Teresa Hedrick of Rupert; one sister, Gay Eilts of Wabash, Ind.; three brothers, Robert Hunter of Crawley, Carl Hunter of Rupert, Kirby Blankenship of Kieffer; 23 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
