[From the New York Times, 30 Sept 1993] U.S. Journalist Feared Dead In Battle for a Georgian City An American journalist who was a frequent contributor to The Wall Street Journal is presumed to have been killed in the battle between Georgian troops and separatists for control of a regional capital, The Journal said yesterday. The reporter, Alexandra Tuttle, 34, is thought to have been killed on Sept. 22, when Abkhazian rebels shot down a Tupelov-134 plane flying from Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, to Sukhumi, the capital of the Abkhazia region. The separatists took control of the city Monday night. Ms. Tuttle, who lived in Paris, was a regular contributor to the Leisure and Arts Page and the Editorial Page of The Wall Street Journal's European and United States editions for the past three years, on subjects ranging from wars to art history. She has also written for Time magazine and The New York Times. |

Print Tuttle, a correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, was killed aboard a military aircraft when it was hit by an Abkhazian ground-to-air missile. The plane crashed as the pilot attempted to make an emergency landing in Sukhumi. Tuttle boarded the flight in Tbilisi and was on her way to conduct an interview with Georgian head of state Eduard Shevardnadze. |
