KORNBLUM, Alan David
Alan Kornblum of Solvang, died September 23, just two months after his beloved wife Sheila. Born in Chicago, Alan served with the Air Force in the Korean War until 1957. Upon returning to the U.S., he attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he met his wife Sheila McCarthy, whom he married the same year. He received his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cal in 1959. Over the years, Al worked with Southern Pacific Railroad and Upjohn, before starting his own business, Piedmont Foam Engineering, in Mooresville, North Carolina. Al and his family moved back to the Santa Ynez Valley in 1980. They purchased the McCarthy family homestead, previously owned by Frank and Elizabeth McCarthy, Sheila's parents, on Tiana Drive and lived there until 2007. They recently moved to Rancho Santa Ynez Mobile Home Estates in Solvang. Married fifty two years, Alan and Sheila have four children: Matthew who resides in Florida; Elizabeth Kornblum Devine of La Canada, California; Jennifer Younce in Missouri; and Avian Hall who resides in Solvang, CA. They have seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild born in September. Alan is survived by his brother, Edward and sister Meta Reistad. His brothers William and Ronald predeceased him. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, December 21, 2009, at 1:00 pm at Loper Funeral Chapel/Ballard Country Church in Ballard, CA. A gathering of family and friends will commence immediately afterward at the Clubhouse of the Rancho Santa Ynez Mobile Home Estates in Solvang. Loper Funeral Chapel, Directors |
