Don H. Miller, 85, a resident of Irish Lake, died at 7:32 p.m. Saturday (April 14, 2001) at his home.

Mr. Miller was first employed by the Allen Insurance Agency Inc., Huntington. He then moved to Marion where he was employed for 39 years by the Local Finance Corporation, serving as president, general manager and director from 1958 until his retirement in December 1975. He had also been president of the Grand National Life Insurance Company and president of the Guardian Agency Inc. He served as the Indiana State Insurance Commissioner from 1982-86; director of the Marion Federal Savings and Loan Association of Grant County; director of Bell Fibre Products Inc., Marion; president and director of the National Consumer Finance Association (NCFA) and Indiana Consumer Finance Association (ICFA); vice president and director of the Michigan Consumer Finance Association (MCFA). He had served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the South Pacific during World War II. He served as president and director of the Marion Chamber of Commerce, Marion General Hospital, and the United Fund; secretary and director of the Marion Kiwanis Club; served on the advisory committee for Marion College and Vincennes University; and had been a member of the board of trustees of the First United Methodist Church in Marion. He attended the North Webster United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Marion American Legion Post; Hanna Lodge 651 F&AM, Wabash; the Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shrine, Fort Wayne; Meshingomesia Country Club, Marion; the Mecca Club; and the North Webster Kiwanis Club.

He was born Sept. 12, 1915, in Huntington to Ardo F. and Hazel Thomson Miller. He graduated from high school in Huntington. His first marriage was to Crystal W. White on March 22, 1934. They spent most of their married life in Marion, moving to Irish Lake in 1986. His wife died Aug. 21, 1998. His second marriage was to Ann McPartland on Feb. 3, 2001. She survives.

Also surviving are a son, Timothy Don Miller, Fishers; two stepsons, Steve Riffle, Bellevue, Ohio, and Craig Riffle, Goshen; a stepdaughter, Lori Mahr, Ireland; a brother, Robert F. Miller, Boytan Beach, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Paul (Margaret) Hansen, Cheyenne, Wyoming; five granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sarah Jane O’Connell; and a brother, Clifford Miller.

Calling is 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, with a memorial service conducted by Hanna Lodge 651 at 8:15 p.m., at the Smith and Sons Miller Chapel, 208 N. Maple St., South Whitley. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Rev. Janet G. Brown officiating. Burial will be at the South Whitley Cemetery with American Legion Post 253 presenting military honors.
