Rev. J. Ben Eller
Pastor J. Ben Eller resigned as pastor of the Coats Church on October 11, to become effective March 1, 1960. At that time, he will have finished 10 happy and successful years in this pastorate. Many people have said that they think this has been one of his happiest and most useful pastorates, although he has served several strong churches in North Carolina, as well as. in other states.
When Mr. and Mrs. Eller moved to Coats in March 1, 1950, the church had poor facilities, no pastor's home, but rented an apartment for the pastor. The lot on which the new church stands has been bought and paid for; the present church building has been built and paid for. A beautiful and commodious home for the pastor has been erected, into which Mr. and Mrs. Eller moved in August of this. year.
At the beginning of this 10-year pastorate there were 240 members in the Coats Church. During the 10 years 351 members, 250 of them coming for baptism, have joined the church. The present membership is 439 - a net gain of 199. Church organizations have nearly doubled. A Brotherhood has been organized and is thriving. Total offerings to missions have doubled.
Mr. Eller, a native of Madison County, is a graduate of Mars Hill and Wake Forest colleges. He received the Th.M. degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1916.
The churches in North Carolina which Mr. Eller has served include Grey Stone in Durham. First Church in Statesville, and Asheboro Street in Greensboro, which he served for 16 years, 1934-1950.
Mr. Eller is well known and greatly beloved by people in North Carolina as well as in other states where he has been pastor, including Virginia, where he served churches in Danville and Salem. He has been active in denominational work, serving for some years as a member of the General Board of the Baptist State Convention and on various committees of the convention. He plans to retire from the active pastorate on March 1, 1960, but no doubt he will be kept as busy as time and strength will permit in pastoral supply work.
Mrs. Eller, the former Ruth Cozart, is a graduate of the WMU Training School, Louisville, Ky. She has been a real helpmate to her husband in all of his pastoral work and service.
