DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM HENRY ELLER 1

RICK CARSON, 1232 Coffelt Rd., Hixon, TN 37343

SIXTH GENERATION
The parents of William Henry Eller are not known. Some genealogists think that his father was William "Bill" Eller of Towns County, Georgia. The inconsistency is that William "Bill" Eller was born in Georgia and the census shows that William Henry Eller's father was born in North Carolina.
A second inconsistency is his service in the Confederate Army. William Henry Eller married Malinda Bramlett in Pickens County, Georgia in 1871. No other records have been found of William Henry Eller in either Pickens or Gilmer Counties until 1880. He was found in the 1880 census of Gilmer County. He served in the Confederate Army and surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia April 10, 1865. His parole papers which his wife, Malinda Bramlett possessed, was confirmed on 10-6-1927 by Lillian Henderson, the superintendent of Georgia Soldier Roster Commission. He was not found on the rolls of the Georgia Unit that he was discharged.
A third inconsistency is service in the Federal Army. His wife applied for a Federal pension, but was turned down because she possibly referred to the wrong William Eller. She referred to a William E. Eller from North Carolina whose widow was receiving a pension. The William E. Eller served three months in 1863 in Company F, 14th Battalion, North Carolina.
I can find no records confirming that William Henry Eller was in Gilmer or Pickens County, Georgia prior to 1870. I speculate that he joined a North Carolina Confederate Army Regiment and was captured at Appomattox with the "Gilmer County Boys". I further speculate that he was repatriated and served in the Federal Army until the end of the war. For some unknown reason, possibly meeting his wife or returning to see an old war friend, he traveled and stayed in Gilmer County, Georgia.

William Henry Eller (1864-1915) / Malinda A. Bramlett (1856-1941)
William Henry Eller was born in 1844 in North Carolina and died in about 1915 in Gilmer County, Georgia. He married Malinda Adaline Bramlett in about 1871. Malinda was born 3-13-1856 in Georgia and died 3-7-1941 in Gilmer County, Georgia. William and Malinda are buried in Liberty Baptist Cemetery off of old route 5 just South of Ellijah, Georgia. His tombstone inscription shows he was in the 11 Georgia infantry during the Civil War.
The Georgia Civil War records show he was in Company D, 11th Regiment Georgia Infantry Army Northern Virginia of the Confederate States of America. They were from Gilmer County, Georgia and were called the "Gilmer County Boys". William Henry Eller was a private and surrender at Appomattox, Virginia 4-9-1865.
By matching Gilmer County, Georgia census records, it was determined that Malinda's father was James Bramlett. In the 1860 census, James had a daughter, Malinda, who was 3 years old. This matches the age of the Malinda Bramlett who married William Henry Eller.

Honorable John W. Clark
Atlanta, Ga.

Honorable Clark, I am taking the liberty of giving you some information related to Mrs. Malinda Eller of the Gilmer County whose name has recently been placed on the Confederate pension list. I am sure that your good nature has been imposed on and a fraud perpetrated somewhere by somebody as her husband saw service in the Federal Army during the War between the States in the government.

I made an effort on her behalf several years ago to obtain a Federal pension for her but failed because she had lost his parole or discharge papers from the Federal Army.

I am sorry for the woman and am willing to render her all the sympathy I can but I do not feel like Georgia should pension the widow of a man who took up arms against his own state and country in that terrible conflict. Mrs. Eller is, I think, a good woman and my neighbor but I cannot bring myself to the point of thinking that she should share in the Confederate funds when Confederate soldiers and their widows need all aid more than then we are pensioned for them.

I would rather you would not divulge the source of this information as it would make enemies for me.

Honorable John W. Clark Pension Director

Dear Sir, some time ago I wrote you enclosing a communication sent me by the Lamental Watson. If you did not consign my letter to the waste basket please return the enclosure from Gen. Watson as I would like to keep it.

When the widow of a man who deserted the Confederate Army and joined the "Yankees" and fought against the South until the war ended can draw a Confederate pension... It is time to let the bans ... clear down and write everybody to... fold of Confederate pensioners.

Yours Truly    J.E. Stembridge
