A SPECIAL QUERY from MICHAEL A. REESE, 7547 Quiet Forest, Houston, TX 77041. ( Mr. Reese will appreciate reader response to his following proposal)
PROPOSAL: David Eller (1816-1883) and HENRY ELLER (b ca 1801/1810-1848) were the sons of Peter Eller, Jr. and Mary Anne (Pennington) Eller.
I. FAMILY TRADITION. The son of David Eller and Jane (Hargett) Eller, his second wife, was Henry D. Eller. Henry D. stated that his grandfather was "Peter Eller from the mountains, somewhere around Asheville." He never knew his grandparents as they had died before lie was born. Henry knew only what his father had told about the Eller s. Peter Eller Jr. died Nov. 1851 which is in agreement with what Henry remembered. The names of David, Henry, and Jacob were common to families of David Eller (1816-1883) and Peter Eller, Jr. (1778-1851). The traditions were handed to Irby W. Eller of Memphis, TN, who was the nephew of Henry D. Eller.
II. GEORGE MICHAEL ELLER AND DESCENDANTS OF HIS IN AMERICA (abbreviated GME hereafter). James W. Hook, author of GME, researched the lines of his own ancestory George Michael Eller, Peter Eller Sr., John Eller, Simeon Eller. Only five pages, about 1% of the book was devoted to Peter Eller, Jr. and understandably so.
111. ESTATE RECORDS OF HENRY ELLER. Henry Eller died in Union Co., NC in 1848. 'He left a widow, Elizabeth (Secrest) Eller and four children: Alfred P. (Peter?), Mary Anne (after her grandmother, Mary Anne Pennington Eller ?), Nancy Minerva, and Clarissa Jane Eller. Elizabeth remained in Union Co., NC for a while after 1850, settling her husband's estate, see Court Minutes of Union Co., NC
IV. CENSUS RECORDS. David Eller, recorded on wp 68 and pp. 34, near his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Eller, on wp 84 and p. 42. Elizabeth was born about 1810 and presumably her husband (Henry Eller) would have been a little older, born ca 1801-18 1 0. This would place Henry as the third son of Peter Eller, Jr. Elizabeth Eller, 1860 had returned with her children to Wilkes Co., NC to her roots! David Eller stayed in Union Co., NC for the rest of his life. By the 1870 Census, Alfred P. Eller family had moved to Wapello Co., IA and were living near the James Hook family and Virginia (Eller) Hook, their relatives, but they aren't included in the GME book. By 1880 the A. P. Eller's had returned to Wilkes Co., NC. They had gone to Iowa for his wife's health. She was Nancy Jane Stout, daughter of Col. Jonathan Stout. Nancy suffered from tuberculosis which eventually took her life. Alfred's second wife was Mary E. Walker. Dates of his marriage: 6 May 1867 and 25 Oct. 1877, both in Wilkes Co., NC.
V. SANDY RIDGE TOWNSHIP. The Secrest Family owned land on Twelve Mile Creek in Mecklenburg Co., NC. This land was sold in 1836 (Deed Records, Union Co., NC, Book I which was not created until 1840 from Mecklenburg Co., NC). Those signing the deed were from Wilkes Co., NC and were all Secrest's. Mary Ann (Secrest) Eller, wife of Jacob Eller, and her sister, Elizabeth Secrest, who was to marry Henry Eller about 1837-1842, were both grantors. We know Elizabeth's maiden name from her grand-daughter, Truly Bell (Eller) Ragan, daughter of Alfred P. Eller. This is only by family tradition, as no marriage license was found. Henry and Elizabeth migrated to Sandy Hill Township about 1844. Henry's brother, David Eller (1816-1883), followed about 1845-1846. The Eller s went there to mine gold, evidently ].earning of Sandy Ridge from the Secrest family, who had owned land there and because Jacob and Henry had married Secrest daughters.
VI. VANNOY AND KILBY RELATIVES. Living in the household with David Eller and his wife, Elvira Dempster (Withers) Sample Eller, were James Vanoy (Vannoy), David C. Kilby, and Marcus Kilby, see 1850 Union Co., NC Census wp 68, p. 34. These two families were closely related and are mentioned throughout the GME book as being relatives of the Ellers from Wilkes/Ashe counties, NC.
Although no document has been found which proved David and Henry Eller of Union Co., NC were the sons of Peter Eller, Jr. and Mary Anne (Pennington) Eller, all of the bits and pieces of evidence, cited above, prove they were, at least to my own satisfaction. Reactions from readers of the Eller Family Newsletter will be most appreciated. M.A. Reese
