Dear J. G. Eller,

Thank you very much for you interesting letter! I was very excited with the data on the Eller family. Perhaps you have solved a mystery for me.

I have not had any luck or correspondence on my Eller family. I did not know where to look. In 1982 when I first started tracing my ancestry I was given an old family history from a Shoupe cousin. This history was four pages of information written May 1, 1955 titled "Family History Shoup Family-"The first page recorded this information:

Henry Shoup, Sr. Born 1753 (date unknown) died Nov. 27, 1833. Was married to Elizabeth Selson on May 4th, 1779

Henry Shoup Wife Christina Eller
Abram Shoup
MollymarriedShrock
Nancy"O'Connor
Millie"Bacon
Delia"Trimble-Brown
Henrietta" Duffield
Bridget" Matchet
Margary" Hartman

Samuel

George R.Shoup born July 311, 1811, married ElizabethMattern Feb. 28, 1840 Feb.7, 1857 (George) Elizabeth Died 1908.

The bottom of the first page lists a few of George and Elizabeth (Mattern) Shoup's descendants.

Page 2 and 3 recorded the same information, but James
Shoup appears as a child of Henry Shoup and Christina Eller.

I found a 1977 SAR application for a Mr. George Duffield
Smith. He was a member of the SAR under his ancestor Henry
Shoup Sr. He is a descendant of Henrietta Shoup b.
6-22-1822, daughter of Henry Shoup Jr. and Christiana Eller.

In 1983 Mr. Smith wrote that Christiana Eller was the daughter of Christian Eller and his wife Mary Beefle, according to the Compendium of American Genealogy by Virkus, Vol. VII Page 658. I checked this source and I did not find any proof of a daughter named Christiana or Christina. it does not seem like Mr. Smith found any proof.

I have tried to verify the Shoup history and Mr. Smith's research. I have the will of Henry Shoup and wife Christina Shoup dated 1846. It does not mention Christina's maiden name. It does list twelve children:

Mary Shoup      married John Shrock
George R. Shoup
Abraham Shoup
Nancy Shoup      married John Connor
Pamelia Shoup
Delilah Shoup      married Benoui Trimble
Henrietta Shoup
James Shoup
Bridget Shoup
Margery Shoup
Elizabeth Shoup
Samuel Shoup

I am interested in learning the source of Gale E. S. Honeyman's information regarding "Christina Eller (pre1790-post 1871 m. Shoup." Perhaps this may prove the Eller name for me. Does 1790-1871 represent her birth and death dates?

I am enclosing a new descendant chart for Christina Eller and Henry Shoup, "Family History Shoup," and the will of Henry Shoup.

Thank you very much for the information on Henry Eller Sr. and Henry Eller II. This is a considerable amount of information. If this Christina Eller, daughter of Henry Eller is my ancestor, you have given me several generations back in my ancestry. It is much appreciated. I have not received a letter like this one before! The Bigler information is also interesting.

I will send a copy of my information to Gale Honeyman.
Thanks agian.
Sincerely,

To: J. Gerald Eller, Rt. 2, Box 145-D, Whittier, NC 28789
FROM: Clarice Eller Stanley, 605 Vine St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935

This correspondence comes as a result of my sending a copy of the Will of George Michael Eller obtained from the Court House Records of Frederick Co., MD to A. Wm. "Bill" Eller, 370 Upham St., Lakewood, CO 80226. He in turn asked me to send you my original copy, which might be more useful for reproduction. (Eds. the copy of the George Michael Eller Will to be published in a later issue.)

In case it might be of interest, I am also enclosing some documents pertaining to the Henry & Elizabeth Eller family; namely, copies of Washington Co., MD Deed Book H, pp 657, 658, & 659, and Deed Book M pp 462, & 463. The first mentioned lends proof of the names of the children of Henry & Elizabeth; wherein their oldest son, Joseph Eller, is purchasing 196-1/2 acres of land from the other heirs of the estate of Henry Eller deceased, recorded 21 April 1794 - at the rate of 40 pounds to each brother and sister, except for the youngest child Peter who was a minor at the time. The second deed recorded 25 April 1800 finds Peter receiving his share of 40 pounds due him from a John Fultz as result of brother Joseph's sale of land to Fultz previously, and Peter now is legally entitled to his share of that transaction.

This is the Peter Eller, I believe, who settled in Washington Co., West Bethlehem Township, PA soon after 1800. Please refer to my submission to the Chronicles published August 1988, page 112. I am attempting further research on Peter's family. Please see also family group sheet for this family enclosed.

I am desirous of obtaining all information possible on any of the descendents of Henry & Elizabeth Bigler Eller. George Michael Eller's family is on record thanks to Mr. James W. Hook, with his publication "George Michael Eller and Descendents of His in America" in 1957. My brothers Charles and Ralph Eller and I share a copy that we inherited from our father Berrell Eller, deceased, of Marshall Co., WV. He purchased this book soon after James William Hook's death. A hand written notation appears on the bottom of page II "James William Hook passed on Monday, Oct. 21, 1957".

Some additional information on the descendents of Henry and Elizabeth was obtained from some Missouri History publications. One of the Eller Association Members, Mrs. Edith D. Lyle, 15900 E. 45th. Place, Independence, MO 64055 read my family history in the August 1988 Chronicles and wrote me sharing some facts accumulated while doing her own Eller research, quoting book and page numbers. I in turn wrote to the Mid-Continent Library in Independence, MO and obtained the following:-
From the PIONEER FAMILIES OF MISSOURI published 1876, page 398
Re: ELLER It states "Jacob, Joseph and Daniel Eller were born and raised in Maryland". Note: All three are sons of Henry & Elizabeth. It further states "Jacob married Margaret Willard, and their children were: Philip, George, Daniel, John, Sally, Susan, Margaret, Jacob, Jr., and Elias". There is no mention of "Peter" my great great grandfather who settled in Marshall Co., WV about the same time Elias went to Missouri. Either Philip was correctly Peter,

or there actually was a Philip, and the person contributing the family information at that time in Missouri, had no knowledge of Peter in Marshall Co., WV. However, it was always a known fact in our West Virginia Eller families that Peter had a brother Elias who went West, and that they married Standiford sisters. This particular history further states that "Jacob, Jr. married Elizabeth Grimes and settled in Callaway Co., MO in 1837" This is true as there is record of his deed 1 Sept. 1837, Calloway Co., MO records (copy in my possession). "His children were: Warner (Warren), Willard, John T., Ann M., Martha and Elizabeth". (Does not mention Daniel Willard & John Thomas, the two younger children). History goes on with "Elias Eller settled in Audrain Co. in 1838 and married Mary Standeford (Standiford) of Virginia and their children listed were: Abraham (Abram), Lizzie, Eleanor H., Margaret J., Mary A., Susan V., George E., Rachel and Joseph" Here again a child is missing - the oldest, William Eller; however see next paragraph.

HISTORY OF CALLAWAY COUNTY, MISSOURI - Pub. 1884, Pages 860, 861 "WILLIAM ELLER was born in Marshall Co., WV, near Wheeling April 7, 1833, son of Elias Eller who was born in Maryland. His mother was Mary Standiford Eller born in Virginia. They settled in Audrain Co., MO about 1839. Jacob Eller brother of Elias settled in Callaway Co., MO and died about 1866. His widow, Elizabeth (Gaines) Eller was born in Maryland and about 81 years of age." Eight children are listed for Elias:- "William, Abram, Elizabeth wife of George Whaley, Ellen who lives in Kentucky, Margaret married to Frank Kilgore of Callaway, Mary wife of Jesse Bright, now resides in Montana, Susan deceased, wife of Clifton Black of Audrain Co., and George also of Audrain."

With further reference to William Eller, it states that "in 1861 he joined Price's army, was elected lieutenant of Company K, of Gates' lst Missouri Cavalry, and afterwards commanded the company; was engaged in the battles of Lexington, Pea Ridge, and the Big Black, near Vicksburg. He was captured at the latter fight, and confined on Johnson's Island for twenty-two months, then paroled in February 1865. Makes mention also that he was a member of the Christian Church."

My conclusing is that my great great grandfather Peter Eller of Marshall Co., WV and the two Missouri Ellers, Jacob, Jr. & Elias are brothers, and grandsons of Henry and Elizabeth.

If anyone has any information on any descendents of Henry & Elizabeth Bigler Eller, especially their sons Joseph and Daniel, would appreciate hearing from them. A good question is "what happened to all the Missouri Ellers"?
