RE: INTERNATIONAL ELLER CONF. II - ESTES PARK, COLORADO - JULY 17-20, 1991

REPORT ON SEARCH FOR THE DESCENDANTS OF THE IMMIGRANT HENRY ELLER, ABT. 1726-1788, AND WIFE ELIZABETH BIGLER ELLER OF MARYLAND.

By:      Clarice V. (Eller) Stanley, 605 Vine St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935

I have compiled a Computer Genealogy Book on the five sons of Henry & Elizabeth Bigler Eller, and their descendants of which I could find record so far. The seven daughters; I have not begun. This is merely a report of how this work came about, and will not give genealogical data here, as this first family has already been published in the Eller Chronicles. My follow up data will be found in this book. The sons as follows:

  1. 1. JOSEPH ELLER:
Could find no information except the name of his wife, and in the 1800 Census of Frederick Co., MD he was over age 45 and had 5 daughters and 3 sons.
  2. 2. HENRY ELLER, JR. - Settled in Ohio:
Here I must give credit to Mr. Gale E. S. Honeyman of San Francisco, CA, and also to the Eller Chronicles for publishing his research, which I have added. When I was in California a couple of years ago I talked with him by phone, and later corresponded with him.
  3. 3. JACOB ELLER, SR.:
This is my direct ancestor, whose descendants comprise the greater part of my book. These were the West Virginia Ellers, through his son Peter; and the Missouri Ellers through the lines of sons Jacob, Jr. and Elias Eller
  4. 4. DANIEL ELLER:
Settled finally in Iowa. In the early 1800's he lived in Fayette Co., PA, per Census Records. He last appeared on that county's 1830 Census. Daniel Eller was not listed as having bought or sold land in that county, as we checked the Court House Records in Uniontown, PA. There I lost him - until again the Chronicles came through with research of Thelma Hepper of Lebanon, S.D. Through correspondence with her I have added her findings.
  5. 5. PETER ELLER:
The youngest son, settled soon after 1800 in Washington Co., PA. He and his family lived and died there. My husband John and I have made several trips to Washington, PA for this research.

These are the sons that comprise my book. Theirs was a Westward movement from Maryland.

How did I begin? First there was my father Berrell Eller, of Marshall Co., WV, who spent a lot of time in the 1960's. looking for his ancestors. He bought the George Michael Eller Book, but could not connect with George Michael. The GME Book touches on the Henry Eller Family, and the author James W. Hook seemed to believe they might have been brothers. My father died in 1971, and from his notes it appeared that he thought we might find some answers by going to Hagerstown and Frederick, Maryland.

After my retirement at the end of 1983 from the office of the Teamsters Union Local *697 in Wheeling, WV I began my search. I have two brothers, Charles Eller who is here with his wife Barbara, and the youngest Ralph Eller who passed away June 29, 1991. Ralph was, and Charles is a Land Surveyor in Marshall Co., WV., and are quite familiar with Court House Records. Ralph gave me a little tour one day in the Moundsville, WV Court House and explained how to go about finding Births, Deaths, Marriages, Wills, & Deeds. To this knowledge I added Census Records, Library Records, etc. This finally led my husband John and me to Maryland to check Census Records there, as well as land and marriage records. Through the Census we found Jacob, Jr. & Elias in Missouri. As a follow up, we later traveled to Audrain and Callaway Counties of Missouri to pursue records there. Then came the Eller Chronicles; and as a result, correspondence with Edith D. Lyle of Independence, MO. Some of her research information clarified some of mine.

I might mention too, that research today has been made a little easier than it was, say 20 yrs. ago. Census Records from microfilm are being copied into printed form, as well as Court House Records, Cemetery Records, etc.; and are being sold or made available in Libraries. Professional Genealogists do hold seminars or workshops from time to time, and I have attended a couple. I also do research for the Marshall Co. Historical Society, Moundsville, WV. As of 1984 I became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. This was through my grandmother, my father's mother Elizabeth Yoho Eller through the line of Peter Yoho of Marshall Co., WV who died about 1823. I have only seen a few Eller's mentioned as Rev. War Soldiers, and assume they were "Dunkards" or a faith that held War as objectionable, or were not here during the Revolution. However, in doing research for a potential DAR member, I did find that The Dunkards shared their buildings and volunteered as nurses for the wounded and sick during the Rev. This was at Ephrata or Dunkerstown, PA. Ellers in the Revolution needs more research.

This Henry & Elizabeth Bigler Eller Computerized Genealogy is not indexed; however, it begins with a descendancy list, starting with Henry Eller, and everyone is linked to him through Marriage Numbers. Every individual has an RIN (Record Identification Number) and every family has an MRIN (Marriage Record Identification Number or Family Number). By Scanning down the list, you can see who belongs to what family, who is married to whom, so to speak. The Program that I use is called PAF (Personal Ancestor File updated program number 2.2) supplied by the Family History Dept., L.D.S. Church, Salt Lake City, Utah. My records are installed on a hard disk, as floppies soon fill up, and you cannot do complete Pedigree Chart linkage. have had a letter from them recently asking for a copy of any Family Research I might have completed, by surname, to be forwarded to them on floppy disks. This would be added to their computer bank.

The benefits of a computer are that after all data is entered, you can print family group records, pedigree charts for anyone you care to, as long as they are linked in the Family. Another thing that is helpful is that Notes can be made about any Family Member you enter. This is where you tell your stories. This Book is not complete, it is a Beginning, and lets hope through the Eller Association and the Chronicles that more information will surface, and we will find more of our lost Ancestors. This Book is my contribution to the Eller Association. In closing, would like to show you the efforts of a daughter-in-law of my brother Ralph Eller - The 21 x 27 inch size Eller Coat of Arms done in Needlepoint, by Ellen Eller, wife of Carl Eller, Roberts Ridge, Marshall Co., WV. This will be a family keepsake.

A FAMILY GENEALOGY OF (IMMIGRANT) HENRY ELLER & ELIZABETH BIGLER FAMILY OF MARYLAND AND DESCENDANTS
by Clarice V. (Eller) Stanley, 605 Vine St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935

A Review

At the close of the preceding report to the '91 Eller Family Conference, Clarice Stanley presented to the Eller Family Association a copy of her book of approximately 293 pages bearing the above title.

The large looseleaf book might be properly labeled a research-in-progress report. As such, it is a notable contribution to the genealogy and family history of the Henry Eller/Elizabeth Bigler lineage. The report is the largest single body of documented information on an Eller- immigrant since the publication of J. W. Hook's 1957 book on George Michael Eller.

At the very beginning of the report is an extensive computer generated Descendant Chart that lists every individual descendant mentioned in the book. This chart is reproduced next in this issue. After the chart, the remainder of the first section of her report deals with the genealogy of the immediate family of Henry Eller/Elizabeth Bigler. Four additional sections then focuses on sons and their descendants in this order: Henry Eller-, Jr.; Jacob Eller, Sr., Jacob Eller, Jr., Elias Eller and Peter Eller s/a Jacob Sr.; Daniel Eller, Peter Eller, s/o Daniel; Peter Eller, s/o Henry Sr.

Each section has a number of computer charts: descendant, ancestral, family group, etc. In addition each section includes narrative material, maps and pictures. The documentation appears to be complete and thorough. With Clarice's permission, several stories will be drawn from the report for future issues of the Eller Chronicles.

Considerable material on Henry Eller, submitted by Clarice, has appeared in past issues of the Eller Chronicles (Vol. 11: 2, 111:3, IV; V:I). Additional material on the same line, submitted by Gale E. S. Honeyman, appears in Vol. II: 2; by Thelma N. Hepper in Vol. II:2; by Brian Christensen in Vol. IV:4, and by A. Wm. Eller in Vol. IV:4.

To all who may contemplate writing a genealogy book, Clarice's research methodology is recommended, especially her use of the computer. That she used a computer did not eliminate her need to apply Conventional research methods. She searched the census reports, courthouse records, Bibles, cemeteries, etc. and from these sources entered her data into the computer in the same manner as filling in a Family Group Sheet. Her computer software program allowed her to also enter full documentation for each entry and add as much narrative material about each as she wished. To fill conventional family group sheet forms by hand with so much information is impossible.

With her data stored in the computer she is able to generate many different charts automatically. New information can be added with ease, corrections to existing data is no problem and, more importantly, the data can be shared easily with others. There is no limit to the amount of narrative that can be inserted at any point.

I urge readers to examine the Descendant Chart from Clarice's book which follows and consider these advantages of computer generated Descendant Charts:

  1. ) By inspection one can quickly determine if a name is missing
  2. ) The kinship among any two individuals is readily apparent.
  3. ) Copies of the chart can be printed automatically for sharing with others.
  4. ) The ability to automatically generate copies of the chart greatly facitates the collaboration of a group who might be working on the same project, such as writing a book.
  5. ) Such charts, if placed at the beginning of a genealogy book, becomes a sort of table of contents and index. Think how useful such a chart would be at the beginning of J. W. Hook's GME book. Those who contemplate a revision of that book should consider carefully using the Descendant Chart in this manner.
  6. ) I predict more and more genealogy books of the future will utilize this approach as Clarice has done.

[Note: The Descendant Chart from Clarice's report begins on the next page but some instructions are added to assist in the interpretation of the chart............ J. G. Eller, Ed.

The followindg DESCENDANT CHART was extracted from:

A FAMILY GENEALOGY OF (IMMIGRANT) HENRY ELLER & ELIZABETH BIGLER ELLER OF MARYLAND AND DESCENDANTS
by Clarice V. Eller Stanley, 605 Vine St., Martins Ferry, OH 43935.

Interpretations of the chart....Eds.
  1. Numeral preceding each name denotes the generation generation of that individual counting from Henry Eller as of the first generation.

  2. Observe that siblings will always have the same generation number.

  3. Succeeding generations are indented immediately after the progenitor of that generation. For example, children of Henry Eller are of generation 2 and each is indented after Henry Eller's name.

  4. Grandchildren of Henry Eller are of generation 3 and are indented after the listing of their parents.

  5. A 3-digit (RIM) number follows each name. This relates to the computer and for the casual reader can be ignored. This is automatically assigned by the computer when the name is first entered. It is essential to the computer process by which descendants charts such as the following are generated.

  6. The 4-digits in parenthesis after each name is the birth year for that individual.

  7. Data is first entered into the computer in such form as to .generate Family Group Sheets. Every individual with its RIM is entered as a member of a Family Group and then that group is given an automatic MRIN number by the computer. A combination of RIN and MRIN numbers enable the computer to automatically reformat the data into Descendant Charts and many other configurations.
