Thank you so very Much for the two photos of the gravesite and plaque recently placed for our ancestress, Mary Beefle Eller. It certainly appears impressive, and as though it will "endure" for many years.

I'm happy to, have been a small part of it (by sending a donation). I think it is more than wonderful that this effort has been made by all contributing descendants of Mary Beefle Eller. But you and the others of the committee, who put in so much time and effort to carry it through are the ones who should be truly thanked and appreciated. And I, for one, certainly do.

Yes, I do hope to visit your state someday and also her grave. Perhaps I can make it next year. However, I've developed some health problems; not too serious, but enough so I can't plan too far ahead any longer.

I have enclosed some "Hoover Family" records. which you may be familiar with. I found it interesting that Andrew Hoover (aka Andreas Huber) was born 1723 at Ellerstadt, district Dunkheim. in The Palatinate....

"An entry in the old Luthern church book at Ellerstadt, gives the record of his baptism: "Anno 1723......

'These Hoovers settled near George Michael Eller on "Little Pipe Creek" in Maryland, and children married into same (Mast) family as Leonard Eller, his son. They and Leonard no doubt emigrated to North Carolina together and obviously settled near one another there.

Perhaps the Registry of this same Lutheran Church would contain information on our Ellers ....

Anyway - wanted to pass it along, just in case....

I do feel Geo Michael Eller, or perhaps his unknown first wife were kinsmen of the Hoovers (in the Palatinate). Also � to the Fouts. Perhaps the names, Leonard Eller & Leonard Fouts (Pfautz) had a common origin. I have underlined the Eller name in red & knoqn associated names. EDL

EDITH LYLE NOTE: No doubt this family emigrated to America with the Eller family and others from "Ellerstadt".

"ANDREAS HUBER (afterwards known as ANDREW HOOVER)
b. 23 Jan 1723 at Ellerstadt, district Dunkheim, in The Palatinate, the 9th & youngest child of GREGOR JONAS HUBER a well-to-do landowner & vintner.

"An entry in the old Luthern church book at Ellerstadt, gives the record of his baptism: "Anno 1723. Den 29 Jan. 1st, Jonas Huber under Seiner frau ANNA MARIA ein sohn gebohren und den 7ten Feb. Andreas Getauft.

"The house of his birth, number 17 Fleissgasse, was demolished in 1900, but the barn and vintner's building were left.

"When he was 15 years old (1738) he emigrated to America. where two of his brothers preceded him:
    Johannes. on the (ship) 'Mortonhouse', 8-24-1728, and
    Christian Johannes on the (ship) 'Dragon', 9-30-1732.

"Andreas arrived on the (ship) 'Two Sisters' at Philadelphia 9-9-1738. He stayed with his brothers and friends in the rich farmland of Lancaster Co., Penna until he was 22 years old. then he married
    MARGARET PFAUTZ (aka FOUTS). who came to America with her parents on the 'William & Sarah' arriving 9-8-1727. (Edith Lyle Notes She probably was closely related to LEONARD FOUTS, associated with PETER ELLER (son of Geo Michael Eller) as mentioned in the book "Geo. Michael Eller�)

~In 1746, Andreas & Margaret moved to Carrol Co.. Maryland. In 1750. he patented fifty acres called 'Mirey Spring' along 'Little Pipe Creek' at the head of Chesapeake Bay near Uniontown. (Edith Lyle note: Neighbor (& perhaps kinsman) of George Michael Eller lived on "Little Pipe Creek in "Frederick Co., Maryland").

~Here the Hoover children were born. except (probably the youngest. During these years Andreas changed his name to ANDREW HOOVER.

~About 1772. Andrew took his family by oxcart through the wilderness to the Uwharrie River in Randolph Co., North Carolina. In 1779 he bought 200 ac on the east side of the river. Much land was available because the new state of North Carolina had taken it away from the British and the Tories. Andrew and sons acquired many acres of the best land in the state. They cut an empire out of the wilderness, established a dynasty, and prospered.

~This was wild country. DANIEL BOONE was a neighbor on the ~Yadkin River, of which the Uwharrie was a tributary.

"Many of the traditions of the Uwharrie are Hoover traditions. The story goes that Andrew Hoover was not afraid of man, beast, or devil! That he climbed to the top of Eagle Nest Rock when others were afraid to; that he swam the raging Uwharrie to save the lives of his horses; that while others in the settlement were home in fear, he set out to face the headless horseman on the Uwharrie trails, and brave the other ghostly figures that moved like lost souls down the valley.

"Andrew built a grist mill at the Fork of the Uwharrie, and this was an important granary of the Revolution. The family also gave $500 to the Revolutionary cause - a large sum of money in those days. But there is no record of these Hoovers as soldiers in the Revolution.

~A small business center grew up at the Forks around the Hoover mill where the big wheels operated a mill to hew loqs into slabs when not turning to grind corn. This mill remained in the Hoover family for more than 150 years.

"In 1792, Andrew left the mill for his son JACOB HOOVER to run, and he retired to a farm where Cedar Run joins the larger river. In 1794, he made his will. appointing his wife and eldest son, Jonas, as executors. Shortly afterwards. he died and was buried near Back Creek on the Uwharrie. His widow died 3 years later in 1797."

    Ellerbeck.-Local, 'of Ellerbeck,' a township in the parish of Osmotherley, N. Rid. Yorks. The surname passed over the border and was found in North Lancashire cormparatively early. The meaning is 'the streamlet by the ellers' i.e. alder-trees; v. Beck. Of course the name is North English.

The following instance is interesting:

The most commonly accepted origin of the surname of Eller in Germany is from the German name for the alder-tree. Ellerbeck in England has the same origin- this suggests that the Eller name was introduced into England very early... Eds.
