JOHN MEAUDON (son of James and Sarah Meaudon)

20 April 1702 - He was baptised in Luccombe parish church (see parish register).
29 September 1704 - He was mentioned in the lease signed by his father for Copps Tenement (see indenture).
6 January 1728 - He was a carpenter from Timberscombe when he began the ninety nine year lease of a tenement and mills in Timberscombe known as Bridge Mead consisting of a dwelling house, outhouses, greist mill, fulling mill and one meadow containing about three acres, along with the water and water courses that ran from Timbersford to Cowbridge. Timber and metals were excluded from the lease. His sister Mary was mentioned in the lease. The yearly rent was £1-6s-8d payable quarterly. He was responsible for the upkeep and repair of the property (see indenture).

29 September 1760 - He commenced a ninety nine year lease, along with his married sisters Joan Glass and Jane Court, of Leighs Tenement in Timberscombe, which included houses, outhouses, lofts, courtlages, orchards, gardens, meadows, pastures and watercourses. He leased it from Paul Orchard who was from Stoke, Devon. It cost an initial £201 and the rent was 6/- per annum (see indenture).
7 November 1760 - He was aged 18 when he signed and sealed the lease for Leighs Tenement (see indenture).

30 March 1851 - He was a gun-stock cutter and beer retailer aged 71 living in Chew Stoke with his wife Hester and their sons James and Henry (see 1851 census).
13 August 1859 - He was a yeoman from Chew Stoke when he made his last will. He made his mark on his will (see will and probate).
7 November 1859 - He died in Chew Stoke aged 80 years of softening of the brain and paralysis - 3 years (death certificate). "Chew Stoke - Death of an old inhabitant - On Sunday most of the yeoman, farmers and other respectable persons of the village, assembled to pay a last mark of respect to the late Mr William Mudon, timber dealer and gun-stock cutter. He had been a great traveller, and had cut gun-stocks for the army under the reigns of the last three Kings and our present Queen. He was well-known and respected throughout Somerset and adjoining counties, as well as in Birmingham and London. Although Mr Mudon was in his 81st year, he did not look more than fifty, and had not a gray hair on his head. He was followed to the grave by his widow, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren" (see The Bristol Mercury and Western Counties Advertiser dated Saturday November 19, 1859).

HESTER MUDON (NÉE BUSSELL) (daughter of William and Grace Bussell)

25 August 1781 - She was baptised in Chew Magna parish church (info from Andy Philips 20/9/09).
19 January 1803 - She married William Mudon in St James' Parish Church, Bristol (info from Mike Browning 24/1/02).
6 June 1841 - Aged 60, she was living in Chew Stoke with (her husband) William and (their sons) Henry and James (see 1841 census).
30 March 1851 - Aged 69, she was living in Chew Stoke with her husband William and their children James and Henry (see 1851 census).
16 February 1860 - She was granted probate of her late husband’s will when she appeared in the Court of Probate at Wells (see will and probate).
7 April 1861 - She was a widow aged 80 and the landlady of the Woodford Lane Beerhouse in Chew Stoke (see 1861 census).
3 June 1862 - She was a beerseller of many years standing when her appeal against the reduction in the rate on her house and pasture land amounting to 2 acres and 35 perches from £9 to £6 was heard at the Temple Cloud Petty Sessions. This reduction deprived her of the right to sell beer. The house contained three sitting rooms, five bedrooms, cellarage for 40 hogsheads and was worth £20 per year for which she could obtain rent. Witnesses were called to confirm the statements made by Mr Mogg, her legal representative. 1 November 1867 - He was a haulier living in West Harptree when, having unloaded some oats, he put up at the Seven Dials Stables. He hung up his horses reins on a peg in the stables. and went into the house to eat and drink. He returned between 5 and 6 in the evening when it was dark. He found that his reins had been replaced by another set (see the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette dated 14 November 1867).
12 November 1867 - George Russett appeared in court charged with stealing a pair of reins belonging to Henry Mudon from the Seven Dials Stables on 1 November. The reins originally had iron buckles Henry's name stamped on them in several places. George Russett had replaced the iron buckles with brass ones.. John Waters, a stable boy at the Seven Dials, said that Mr Russett had come to the house with a pony and cart and had hung up his harness near to the prosecutor's and had left before the prosecutor did. PC Hillier apprehended the prisoner in Temple St, Bristol, driving with the reins missed by the prosecutor. In reply to the charge of stealing, Mr Russett said that he had taken the reins by mistake and did not find out until the following day. He had replaced the buckles after the horse ran away and broke the original ones. Mr Wilton, who appeared for the defence, contended that the reins were taken by mistake by the servant of the accused, and, as he was going from Bath to Bristol, the horse shied at Newton, turned him and his man over, and broke the reins, so that they had to walk the remainder of the way. A further witness who confirmed Mr Wilton's statement and the bench unanimously discharged the accused (see Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette dated 14 November 1867).

Saturday 29 January 1894 - The following notice appeared in the Bristol Mercury: - “Miss Sarah Wines, formerly of Bedminster, will hear of something interesting from James Mudon, 70, Oxford St, St Philip’s, Bristol (see newspaper).
Saturday 11 August 1894 - He gave evidence in Temple Cloud County Court befoe His Honour Judge Callard in a case of alleged serious trespass on land in Chew Stoke in which Mrs Victoria Norton Walker, a widow, of Whitehall Farm, Chew Stoke, sued John Henry Weaver for the sum of £15 damages. James Mudon, carpenter, stated that the damage done to the gates etc was about £1 5s (see newspaper dated Monday 13 August 1894).
1897 - He was living at 70 Oxford Rd, St Philip and Jacob (see 1897 electoral register).
30 March 1901 - He was a widower and a former gun stock cutter aged 76 living at 70 Oxford St, St Philip and Jacob, Bristol, with his "feeble minded" son John (see 1901 census).

2 April 1871 - Aged 47, she was living at 22 Tyler Street South with her husband James and their children John, Malinda A J, Sarah Ann and Lewis (see 1871 census).
3 April 1881 - Aged 58, she was living with her husband James and children John, Sarah Ann, Malinda A J and Lewis at 4 Alfred St, St Philip & Jacob, Bristol (see 1881 census).
22 April 1890 - She was living at 12 Philip St, Saint Philip and Jacob, Bristol, when she died aged 67 of heart disease and bronchitis (death certificate).
23 April 1890 - Her husband James notified the registrar of her death (death certificate).
Monday 28 April 1890 - The following notice appeared under Deaths in The Bristol Mercury – “MUDON - April 22 at 12 Philip St, Marsh, Mary Ann wife of James Mudon formerly of Chew Stoke, aged 67. Respected and beloved by all who knew her. Her end was peace.” (see newspaper).

21 February 1841 - He died of scarlet fever at Chew Stoke, aged 13 (death certificate).

8 October 1912 - He died, aged 55, in the Eastville Workhouse Infirmary, Fishponds Rd, Bristol of carcinoma of the pelvis and glands. He had been a coal haulier in St Philip, Bristol (death certificate).

29 December 1910 - She was a domestic servant aged 28 living in Nailsea when she married Frederick Augustus Hitchings in Nailsea parish church. Her father was shown as John Robert Crane. She signed the register. The witnesses were Elizabeth Ann Parry and Edwin Samuel George Heskins (marriage certificate). (NB Frederick was the brother of her step-father Arthur Hitchings).
