"George Pothecary was a very unpleasant bully of a man. He drank heavily, beat the boys of his family with a leather belt, sometimes tying them to a bed in order to beat them. He abandoned the family on at least two occasions; once after he received a legacy of about £35.00. Mary was born at this time in a workhouse. He returned and took them all off to Scotland. They must have returned, because the next abandonment was when Amelia was about 13. She was working in domestic service in Pontypridd and living at home. She returned home to find they had left leaving her and the two older boys. He had taken them to Flint.
He was possibly a lay preacher.
After the abandonment the two boys Dai and William were sent to Canada by Doctor Barnardo’s. They both later returned to Wales. William had a fruit and vegetable business in Porth. He went bankrupt during the depression.
Dai emigrated to Australia and was connected to a newspaper which was something to do with the fishing industry, it may have been a fishing union newspaper. Violet doesn’t think he married or had children.
William had two Girls, Pat, very musical, married a musician and moved to Brighton, The other married and moved to America later to return alone and work for her father. Neither had children."
