1880 Census:
Hinkley Twp., Grand Lake Stream, Washington Co., Maine
These images of the 1880 census for Hinkley Twp., Washington Co., ME are being put online, for the benefit of others, as a result of the following email that I received on 15 Aug. 2008, from Jane (Sanderman) Mason:
I recently came across some source material that is new to me
and, if you do not already have it, might be helpful to you. Were you aware
that GLS is not included in the 1880 census? I have known for years that the
Hinkley Plantation (Grand Lake Stream) enumeration is missing from the 1880
census films made by the National Archives. Consequently it is also missing
from the various databases online.
I have had a number of queries over the years where knowing who was enumerated
in 1880 in GLS would have been helpful, plus my own family lived there.
Frustration finally hit the "well, do something" point. I placed a query in the
Washington County Genealogical Society newsletter and Bonnie Healy of the
Trescott Historical Society answered.
Bonnie made contact with someone she knows at the Maine State Archives. And the
census was found! It had been bound in with the Penobscot 1880 Agriculture
census which is not online nor filmed for easy use. The Archives made a copy
for Bonnie and she sent a copy on to me. The enumeration district is 165. It
is eight pages long and, a real plus, beautiful clear handwriting.
The table shown below shows the 8 pages of the census. Some
pages were large and required two photocopies and they are shown as image-a for
the top portion and image-b for the lower portion.
The numbering for the pages is according to the census page number and all are
from Enumeration District 165, Hinkley Twp., Washington Co., ME, taken 7-10 June
as noted on the census pages.
