Surnames and Places |
Surnames prefaced by 'van' (Netherlands), 'von' (Germany), 'd'-'de' (France, etc.) or 'l'-la' (Italy, etc.) are often indicative (originally at least) of a person's place of origin. The terms 'von', 'de' and 'la' can all be roughly translated as 'of' or 'from'. So it is that with many cases it is equally correcty to say 'Louis de-Bourbon' or 'Louis of Bourbon'. | ||
