Alamanni confederacy of Germanic tribes
Return to Allemania Line
Notes
Alamanni, also Alemanni, confederacy of Germanic tribes inhabiting the region (called Alamannia)
between the Main and Danube rivers in the 3rd century. They invaded Gaul several times and,
early in the 5th century, conquered the territory that is now Alsace and a large part of
Switzerland.
In 496 they were conquered by Clovis I, king of the Salian Franks, and the
southern part of their territory was included in the duchy of Alamannia. The modern name
for Germany in many Romance languages (French Allemagne; Spanish Alemania) is derived from
the name of these tribes.
