Born 9-22-08. Died 12-22-45 of pneumonia, shortly before she died she was getting blankets out of a home made blanket box and the lid fell across her shoulders and I believe it did damage to her lungs and pneumonia set in, she was thin and very frail. |
Francis Albert Dix Born 10-22-1894. Died 11-19-46, of a lung disorder. Mustard
gas from the first world war is what I have learned even though. He smoked
heavily! Fourteen years difference in their ages.

Frances, Bill & Bert, about 1940
Frances recalls the death of her parents:
My dad died the next Nov.1945 I was 12 years old. I think. My mother's dad lived with us in forest
park, GA. That is where my mom, dad, and brother, Bert (Albert Sidney Dix is
with my mom and dad. My dad was in World
War I. My aunt Nell had my father's flag on a wall. I don't know what happen to
it. |
Bill writes of his parents:
At the time [my mother died] I was bed ridden with pneumonia and the doctor told "Pa", my grandfather, "If the boy makes it through the night he might live." I did!!!!!!!! I was bed ridden on the couch in the living room where I could see across the room into a bedroom where my mother was dying, TWO tall black men, in white uniforms came into the house and went into the bedroom where mother was and had two long poles with a sheet connected to both, (stretcher) they covered mothers face and wedged the long poles between the head and foot boards of the bed and loaded mother onto this thing, covered her entirely and carried her from the house, as the wedged these poles between the head and foot they scratched the head board badly, I remember as if yesterday, the next time I saw this bed was when we arrived at Aunt Ruth's house and Uncle Ralph showed me the bed, next to the refridge., and said "This is yours and Bert's bed while you stay with us." The scratches were on the left side of the headboard, Martha said at the reunion that she might have this bed and was going to let me know? We use to play under Mothers kitchen table with the rounded legs, I understand that you [Russell Dix Whigham] might have this table. When Mom and Dad died we lived for approximately. one year with my grandfather in a small room rented from a neighbor in Forest Park, GA. His name was "PA" to all living beings and most animals!!!! He was 77 years at the time, later lived with his daughter Aunt Essie until she could not care for him, then placed in nursing home in Atlanta, had his teeth pulled at 95 years and died at 102. Lester Maddox (GOV, Ga.) visited him. Frances had been taken to Etta's.
Bert and I was ask for by Aunt Eleanor and Reginald, Their daughter Lyn was and still is like a sister. |
