Arbor Low
July 23
Another busy day! Jennifer and Martha went to downtown Bakewell to do some shopping. Jennifer found several items for gifts for her friends. Stephen and Heather went off to climb rocks at the Roaches. He and Heather had a cold windy morning, which one of the participants will now describe:
The Roaches are a stoney outcrop in the Staffordshire Moors. The weather was a moderate rain but the wind was blowing it sideways. We actually came upon the walk accidently since we couldn't see well because of the fog and my map was not the best. The view would have been tremendous except for the rain and fog. The stone steps were built into the rocks. After becoming wet enough, we decided to look for a place for lunch. Heather's socks and shoes were wet so we hung her socks from the gear shift and brake level. We drove through Leek and then to Ashbourne. We didn't stop in Ashbourne because we couldn't find a parking space. We finally found a pub in Winster where Heather and I had lunch. Heather had a beef burger whereas I had a steak and kidney pie. Of course, there were plenty of chips and peas to go along with the main dish.
After meeting Jennifer and Martha in Bakewell, we went to Arbor Low, the prehistoric stone circle. The view was tremendous since the rain had stopped. The wind though was still very stong. You felt like you could fly. The stone circle is actual within a working farm. Then we went back to Winster to see the market hall, a National Trust property. Then we went to Chris and Clive's Robinson's, in Edensor village. Chris and Clive are friends of family. Clive's parents were good friends with my mom and dad. We had to stop at Clive's parents, Janet and Ed's, because we weren't exactly sure where they lived now. We first had a dinner of English meatloaf, ham, potatoes, and salad for the main course. For dessert, there was rasberries with cream and chocolate cake.
Then after dinner we walked from their village Edensor to Baslow village through the estate of Chatsworth. We saw the bungalow that Janet and Ed were considering for their retirement. Just as we returned to Edensor, Clive had returned from milking on their dairy farm. He took us to see the red deer herd of Chatsworth. Then back to their house for a chat and performances by their sons, Philip and Michael, on the oboe and baritone respectively. We returned to Norwood, Philip and Noreen's home, around 10:45 p.m..
