DNA Testing

DNA testing is easy and painless. It involves the following steps:

  1. Order the testing kit over the internet from FamilyTreeDNA.
  2. Receive the testing kit via US Mail in about 1 week.
  3. Swab your cheek with the enclosed swab. (Detailed instructions are included with the kit).
  4. Complete the FamilyTreeDNA form.
  5. Return the swab and signed paperwork to FamilyTreeDNA via US Mail.
  6. Receive your results and a list of close matches via eMail in 4 to 6 weeks.

You should order the Y-Chromsome 37-marker test (Y-DNA37) or 67-marker test (Y-DNA67). The 12-marker test and 25-marker test were once common but are now considered to be inadequate to distinguish detailed family relationships.

If you order the 37-marker test, you can upgrade to the 67-marker test later without submitting another cheek swab.
