Katharine Hill

F, #47, b. 15 December 1842, d. 23 April 1913
Relationship
Great-grandmother of Sheila Sue Altenbernd
Father*John Hill b. 1811, d. 1866
Mother*Catherine Bueschmann b. 1811, d. 1886
Her common name was Katy Altenbernd.
Katharine was born in Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany, on 15 December 1842.1,2,3,4
She was the daughter of John Hill and Catherine Bueschmann.
Katharine Hill was born in December 1843 in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany.5,6,7
The book "Clay and Norman Counties, Minnesota" about the early settlers in Minnesota contains information about Louis (#48) and Frederick W. Altenbernd (#49). These articles contained some references about their mother Katie. The excerpt on Louis Altenbernd states that Katie Hill arrived in America with her parents when she was twelve. The excerpt on Fred Altenbernd states that Katie arrived in America with her parents when she was eight. Whether she was eight or twelve, this does indicate that Wilhelm and Katharine must have married in America rather than in Germany.
Helen Altenbernd Wichman (#99) remembers Katharine as a stocky woman who wore her hair up in a knot. Apparently, the family did not talk about the past. Their children seemed to know little about their parents. Although the census records show that Wilhelm listed his birthplace as Prussia, neither Helen (#99) nor Irene (#97) can remember ever hearing that or hearing any talk about Prussia.
The following inscription appears on Katharine's headstone. "Es Sollen Wohl Berge Weichen und Huegel Hinfallen: Aber meine gnade soll nicht von dir weichen und der bund meines friedens soll nicht hinfallen spricht der herr, dein errarmer. Jesais 54 - 10."

Katharine Hill and John Hill immigrated in 1853 to Port Washington, Wisconsin, USA, and John Hill arrived on (an unknown value.)8
