     The Altenbernd family has been traced back to the Lippe-Detmold area of which Detmold was the capital. As of 1856, (shortly before two of the Altenbernd sons embarked for America) this area was divided into 13 bailiwicks and had been operating under a constitutional government since 1836. The population in 1856 was 108,236. The majority of the population was of the Calvinistic creed.
     Lippe-Detmold was bounded by Hannover and Hesse-Cassel on the east and by Rhenish Prussia on all other sides. This 418 square miles was almost entirely mountains and hills. The mountains were well wooded and most of the soil was fertile. The climate was mild, but humid.
     A large number of cattle were raised, but the chief industry was agriculture followed by weaving. Exports were wood, wool, thread, and linen.

     Johann was born in Brakelsieck, Lippe Detmold, Westfalen, Germany, on 29 September 1795.2,3
