Dear Flora & William

I didn't forget to write. I've just been so busy - and since momma wrote you soon after the announcement of little John's arrivals, I put off writing until now when there are no more lesson assignments made for the next day.

Although I'm rather later, I congratulate you most heartily, and I hope that little John will fill your lives with sunshine. I don't know what gifts he may have received by this time, or what he could still use, so I'm enclosing a dollar for which you may get him a little remembrance or put in his bank. I'm real anxious to see him. Carroll and Emma were here this P.M. and we told Carroll that you would bring John along in a basket. He looked so funny and said, "in a basket?"

I hope you and John are well. I suppose Helen is still with you. You spoke so much of Helen when you were here that I almost feel as though I've met her. Its fine that she can be with you. And how is little Homer? The cow sure must have been working good when Alma was up there or we wouldn't have had that delicious cottage cheese, ha, ha! Guess you know what I mean. I believe that was the best cottage cheese I ever ate. No wonder Alma got so fleshy - you fed her too well.

Rev. Orlowskys celebrated their silver wedding anniversary last Sunday. Ella, mamma, Mrs. Rev. Schmale, and I were out there. It was a lovely day. After the service we all had lunch out on the lawn where the ladies had set the tables. I've had some real sandwiches. Mrs. Schmale was here again for a few days. This time I had to do the cooking (I know you're not sorry). She is planning to spend the winter in Ann Arbor, Mich. I'm glad we could have her with us again - she sure is getting old.

Will close, for tonight. Hope to see you before many more weeks.

With lots of love to all,

          Julia

My Dear Ones!
To our great joy we received this morning at about half past nine o'clock the news of the birth of our dear little son – we rejoice with you, dear ones – and thank especially the faithful God - that He has made everything well, and graciously helped so far. May He continue to be with us - so that also Flora will soon recover and become strong again – now that she also has become a mother - also a great grace of God, for which we cannot be grateful enough.
With love, kisses and greetings - especially a sweet kiss to the little Altenbernd.

STORY SAYS ROYE HINKLE LOSER IN AN INVESTMENT
(an unknown value)

Reported Former State Treasurer Stephens Also a Victim
----------
G.C. STOERKER IS UNDER ARREST
----------
Brother of Former Pastor of Immanuel Evangelical Church Here
----------
By the Associated Press.
SPRINGFIELD, Missouri -- Two former state officials and a number of Springfield business men Wednesday were revealed as heavy losers in an "industrial" venture which yesterday caused the arrest in Chicago of G. C. Stoerker, 31, upon charges he had misappropriated $100,000 in Pasadena, Calif., and cashed worthless checks there.
Among those losing by promotion of the National Spectralite Company here, it was learned, were: Roy B. Hinkle, of Jefferson City, former state labor commissioner; C. E. Stephens, of Springfield and Jefferson City, former state treasurer; Rev. Paul Stoerker, minister and brother of the accused man; Roy Peacher of Springfield, who failed to get more than $1,000 salary due him, and other Springfieldians.
Stoerker launched the National Spectralite Company after having organized a successful loan and investment company here several years ago. Thousands of dollars worth of stock was sold here and elsewhere in the National Spectralite Company. Later, Stephens forced liquidation of the company, bought assests at forced sale and unsuccessfully attempted to carry on the business.
----------
Mr. Hinkle, who now resides at 403 West Fourth Street, this city, and employed by the United States Department of Labor, is out of the city and could not be reached for an interview. Mrs. Hinkle stated that she preferred not to make a statement until after Mr. Hinkle's return home the later part of the week.
Rev. Stoerker, a brother of the accused man, and said to be on of the losers, was formerly pastor of the Immanuel Evangelical church, in this city.18

Aunt Emma and Carroll

Aunt Emma Stoerker lived in St. Charles with her only child and son, Carroll. Her husband Gottleib had left her some years before, one step ahead of the police. If Emma knew where he was, she wasn't telling. Certainly no one else in the family knew where he was. Emma seemed unembittered by it all so far as I could tell. She was always pleasant, and there was a mutual acceptance of her as part of the Stoerker family. She was still legally married to Gottlieb in those years, but later on she divorced him. Mom told me she was afraid that Gottlieb had remarried on the assumption Emma had divorced him, and she didn't want to get him into possible bigamy problems.
Carroll was considerably older than I. We would visit Aunt Emma and Carroll when we were in St. Charles, and Carroll would try to play with me. What I remember most about him was that he had a lead-melting set. The melted lead could be poured into moulds which he had to make things. There were animals, but primarily he had a virtual army of lead soldiers and equipment such as cannons. I enjoyed watching him make them.
In later years Carroll reunited with his father. Gottlieb, who had no middle name as was the Stoerker custom, then went by the name G. Carroll Stoerker, a very rare instance of a father naming himself after his son instead of the other way around.
