Notes for Thomas Lynch
Private in the St. Mary’s County Militia during the Rev. War and probably fought at the Battle of Long Island during the Rev. War.

Green’s Rest: The Greens Rest plantation was purchased by Thomas’s grandfather and great uncle in 1651. Part fronted on the St. Mary’s River, and part was a small island offshort and near the middle of the river. Originally called St. Mary’s island, later it became known as “Lynch’s Island” when Thomas’s brother inherited the property. In 1879, an ex-Confederate officer bought it and built a bordello; locals soon referred to the property as Tippity Whichity Island after the drinking, gambling and other less than savory activities -- now that is it’s official name. [789]

Thomas himself lived in a one story brick farmhouse on a small hill facing St. Mary’s River.

Thomas enlisted as a private in the 1st Maryland Regiment under William Smallwood soon after it was formed in January 1776. He later was assigned to the 5th Independent Maryland Company, and fought in the Battle of Brooklyn. He was discharged in 1777, although his pension file is unclear as to when. [789]

He claimed a pension on May 7, 1829 at the age of 70 when he could no longer work as a seaman. He appeared in open court in St. Mary’s county, attesting that he has limited resources, including only 100 acres of poor land, an old infirm slave, ten head cattle “very indifferent”, and “one old horse.” He also declared that his family consisted of a daughter aged 20, a daughter aged 25, a son 18 or 19 and a grandson about 6 or 7.

Thomas left no will and his estate was not sufficient to pay his existing debts. [789]
