Notes for William COGGESHALL
William’s profits as a clothier were restricted because London merchants had a monopoly on cloth exports and the domestic market. His son John was thus apprenticed to James Quyke in London. This meant John was not trained as a clothier (Quyke was a tallow calndler) but John was eventually declared a merchant of London.[ [694]]

Will of brother Roger (dated 1541) names William’s sons Henry, John, Nicholas, Roger (all u21) and Besse and Dorothy. [699]
