Appears in Salem court records 6 Jul 1647. Likely from London area. Early mention in New England as John Coggswell’s farmer. Married his daughter and received house and land at Chebacco Falls soon after. In 1668, sold the land and moved to Chelmsford.[
[508]] A 1653 letter from his brother-in-law John Cogswell, Jr. says Waldo’s mother is in Berwick, Uncles John and Barrow are dead, bro Thomas in Ireland.
The Middlesex probate files contain a license to him as an innkeeper, provided he didn’t allow dice, cards or other “unlawful games.”
He is the 3g grandfather of Ralph Waldo Emerson, through his daughter Rebecca. 8g grandfather of Pres. Calvin Coolidge through son Daniel.
