Notes for Thomas Maddock
A Thomas Maddock was admitted to the Baker’s Guild in 1636. This is most likely the same Thomas Maddock who was left a bakery by his father in 1639. Two years later, he married Elizabeth Simcock in Chester. During the first seven years of their marriage, the city was part of the war against the forces led by Oliver Cromwell. The city was under siege, and the Maddock bakery was likely either destroyed or driven out of business for lack of flour (since the mills were destroyed). (

Published by The Record Society for the Publication of Original Documents Relating to Lancashire and Cheshire, 1911. Couples were married by license in lieu of announcing banns at church for three weeks in a row. Since there was a civil war starting, it’s possible normal services were disrupted.
