Notes for John MOSS
Part of Davenport’s company which came from Boston to New Haven before 1639. Original signer of the New Haven compact on 4 Jun 1639. He was active in town affairs before becoming involved in the establishment of Wallingford. John joined with the magistrates and chief inhabitants of New Haven in urging permission "to erect a village on our lands lying above ye great plaine." Permission was granted 10 Oct 1667. For two years, the territory was prospected for an eligible site by John Moss, John Brockett, Abraham Doolittle and others, who suggested the site which was chosen for the village of Wallingford, CT. Since John was a Deputy of the General Court when the name was chosen, and there is speculation he may have been from Walingford, England, he may be responsible for the name. John Mosse appears as a yeoman from Cotteridge, Wiltshire on a list of Charlestown inhabitants appearing in NEHGR vol 131. He is shown as being in Charlestown in 1637 and New Haven in 1640. “John Mousall” is listed on the list of members of the town oligarchy. This appears to be the source of pedigrees that show a birthplace of Cotteridge, but there doesn’t seem to be anything that ties the John in Charlestown with the one in New Haven other than that (contemporary) list. Savage’s has John Mousall as a different man who removed to Woburn and died there in 1665.
