Hessian soldiers in the American Revolution

The Meyers Orts- und Verkehrs-Lexikon des Deutschen Reiches?

Donated by: Barbara A. H. Nuehring; non- member

What is it?

It is a multi-volume gazetteer that lists the 200,000+ names of places as they existed in Germany from 1871 to 1918. It describes towns and villages, parishes and counties, states and provinces, rivers and mountains, and other geographical features, the population size, the different religious denominations, the schools, colleges, and universities, the major manufacturing works, canals, docks, and railroad stations.

Originally published in Leipzig, Germany in 1912-13, the Meyers Orts- was reprinted in 2000 by Genealogical Publishing Company and can be ordered from Amazon.com in a 3 volume set (very expensive). It is also available on Microfiche from any Family History Center (most carry it on hand so you may not have to order it from Salt Lake City). Larger public libraries and most certainly those with large genealogical holdings will probably have it on their shelves.

What I use it for is to determine the civil and church jurisdictions over my ancestor's villages places, in order to know where to find source documents.

It is written in German, using the gothic letter type and descriptions are full of abbreviations.  The first volume gives the means of the abbreviations.
